A Brief History

Founded by Elder William Henry Carter in the heart of Hartford, Ebenezer Holy Temple has a rich legacy that spans multiple decades, reflecting God’s guiding hand from its beginnings in 1974 to the thriving fellowship we are today.

  • Pre-1974 | The Roots and Early Ministry

    Fire Baptized Organization

    • Operated as Ebenezer Church of God, Fire Baptized, Inc. under the Bishopric leadership of Bishop Calhoun of Ohio and Vice Bishop Alice Wilson of Philadelphia, PA. Elder William Henry Carter was a licensed Pentecostal preacher in Connecticut, preaching holiness and trusting God for everything.
    • Late 1960s: Elder Carter became associated with Bishop Bobby Blue, Jr. of New Haven (Rehoboth Temple Church of God).


    Transition to Ebenezer Rehoboth Temple

    • 1973: Elder Carter was asked to serve as Vice Bishop of the newly formed organization under Bishop Bobby Blue, Jr.
    • He accepted the position and changed the church’s name to Ebenezer Rehoboth Temple, Inc.
  • 1974–1980 | Founding of Ebenezer Holy Temple, Inc.

    Official Formation (April 1974)

    • Elder (subsequently Bishop) William Henry Carter felt compelled to establish what is now Ebenezer Holy Temple, Inc. Located at 234–236 Capen Street in Hartford, Connecticut.


    Bishop Carter’s Leadership

    • Bishop Carter served faithfully until his passing in September 1980. He left behind his wife, Evangelist Annie L. Carter, six children, and the church family.
  • 1980–1997 | Transition & Overseer Annie L. Carter

    Leadership Vacancy (1980–1982)

    • The church operated without a bishop/pastor until 1982.
    • Despite struggles and obstacles, the congregation remained strong, built on a solid foundation of faith.


    Overseer Annie L. Carter

    • 1982: Evangelist Annie L. Carter accepted the leadership of the organization as Overseer. She kept the faith, held the church family together, and weathered many challenges.“What God has put together let no man put asunder.”
  • 1997–2024 | Bishop Tyrone Black & Expansion

    New Leadership & Ordination

    • July 1997: Minister Tyrone Black (grandson of Bishop William Carter and Overseer Annie Carter) was ordained as the new pastor of Ebenezer Holy Temple, Inc.
    • June 2002: He became Overseer and shortly thereafter elevated to Bishop, serving as Prelate of EHT, Inc.


    Organizational Growth & Affiliations

    • First affiliated church under Bishop Black’s leadership: Overseer Charity Watson and Mount Bethel Church, Hartford, CT. Additional churches joined: Hartford Faith Tabernacle (Pastor Ethel Green), The Prayer Place (Pastor Katherine Taylor), Rehoboth Church (Pastor Herman Brown), Holy Ghost Deliverance Church (Bishop Lou Ella Smith).


    Honoring the Founder

    • 2002: In honor of the founder, the organization added the dba “Carter Memorial Temple.”


    Milestones Under Bishop Black

    • 1997: First church van purchased.
    • 2004: Church mortgage paid off.
    • 2005: Renovations of the church building completed.
    • 2008: Purchased 100 custom-made pew chairs.
    • July 2012: Property at 234–236 Capen Street sold to Mount Bethel Church of God; worship services held temporarily at the Farmington Marriott.
    • October 27, 2012: New facility purchased at 110 Russ Street in Hartford, CT; first service held on November 19, 2012.

Baptism of the Holy Ghost

We believe in the baptism of the Holy Ghost. It is the endowment of God’s power on a clean and sanctified life. It is accompanied by the same sign as the disciples had on the day of Pentecost—speaking with tongues as the Spirit gave utterance.

The Godhead (Three Persons)
Unity

We are subject to the control of no other ecclesiastical body, but we recognize and sustain the obligations of mutual counsel and cooperation which are common among Christian Churches.
